I had just moved home from Vancouver in the summer of 2001, and my sister was expecting her second child in September. Leesa asked me if I wanted to be present in the delivery room for the birth. I declined because I knew my queasy stomach would not handle the sight of the things that I could only imagine. She didn’t say anything at the time, but little did I know that she was determined to have me attend. She wanted me to experience the magic of birth because she was worried that I may not actually have any children of my own.

The due date arrived and our family gathered at the hospital, waiting impatiently for the baby to arrive. Leesa was induced in the morning and her labor pains came and went for most of the day. Around dinner time, I had decided to sneak away for a quick bite to eat. I returned only a half hour later, to find she had been moved from her hospital room. As I walked in, I could see the commotion through the open doorway of the adjoining delivery room. The nurses called for me to hurry in. I was afraid something had gone wrong so I ran in, without stopping to think. As I approached my sister’s side, a nurse placed one of Leesa’s legs into my arms to hold. I was trapped.

Everything happened so fast - before I realized what was going on, my nephew Felix was born. I instantly felt such an immense connection with my new nephew, my sister, and God. Afterwards, I took a long walk outside with a friend. We stopped briefly at the viewpoint, below the hospital, overlooking Nelson. A warm breeze caressed our skin. My heart vibrated throughout my chest. I could almost see the waves go out into the world. A thought entered my mind - we really are all one. It was a magical night. I am truly honoured that I was given the opportunity to share in the miracle of birth.
