Sending much love to my mother, Kathleen Makortoff, and her BFF, Helen Chernoff Freeman, who have taught me so much about life... They are both tough as nails, they have enormously huge hearts, and are fiercely loyal to family.
Helen and both my parents spent between three and four years in a residential dormitory in New Denver, BC as children. That is where Helen and Kathleen first met; their wonderful friendship has remained strong over the years.

Read Helen's moving story "Girl # 85 A Doukhobor Childhood" which is available at:
"I could not put the book down until I was finished. She beautifully captured the dichotomy of a child's experience - living through such a hellish ordeal. I recognized my mom the very second she entered the story - and had a good chuckle. I am sure Helen's memoir will touch many people" ~ Steff
